Exploring Hamilton Pool

HP+one.jpg

Despite living in the hill country in college I somehow never made it out to Hamilton pool. So when I moved to Austin a few years later I figured I would have plenty of time. Well two summers in Austin went by and I never made it there; then I made the move to Houston and wondered if I’d ever actually go. So I promised myself I would make it to Hamilton Pool in summer of 2019.

Come to find out it books up MONTHS in advance. In February I discovered they were taking reservations and you bet I booked a spot (spaces are limited and they require reservations)! People thought I was crazy for booking something so far out, but I was determined to see this oasis I’d heard so much about.

Summer finally rolls around and Hamilton pool is on the horizon. However, when it rains heavily (as it usually does in May and June) the park will not allow swimming unless the bacteria level is below a certain number. I must have checked the park’s website daily to see if they were beginning to allow swimming. Finally, about one week before our reservation they gave the all clear to swim!

Getting down to Hamilton Pool is a slight trek, I definitely recommend good shoes. There are many hiking opportunities at the park as well but for our group getting to that sweet water was all we could want.

When booking Hamilton Pool you can choose a morning or afternoon reservation. I chose morning since it was a Sunday and my partner and I had to drive back to Houston. We were some of the first people down there so we laid our towels out and explored. It’s truly a slice of heaven. I enjoyed the quiet of the morning, my only wish was that the sun was directly over us cause the water is chilly! Maybe a good reason for the afternoon reservation?

Hamilton Pool is incredibly Instagram worthy and I definitely took pics, but once you’ve gotten a few photos I highly recommend enjoying the tranquility and beauty around you. I could have stayed there all day, but sadly they clear you out toward the end of your reservation for the next group of people. Needless to say I will be going back! Until next time!

Things to know before you go:

  1. Book in advance if you plan to go on a weekend.

  2. Wear comfortable shoes for the walk down and to get in the water (it’s all rocks).

  3. Bring snacks, drinks, floats (I regret not having a float!), chairs, and towels.

  4. Get there before your reservation starts to maximize your time.

  5. Keep an eye on the website for updates about swimming.
